Minecraft was created by a company named Mojang. But it’s a little bit more complicated. Initially, the Minecraft started as a small project of someone named Markus Persson, a.k.a. Notch.
The reason why Minecraft even exists is that Markus “Notch” Persson fell in love with the game named Dwarf Fortress. Dwarf Fortress is a game about controlling the dwarf’s colony, building fortresses, defending against attackers, etc. The game is quite complex, so Markus “Notch” Persson has decided to start working on his 3D version of that game.
That was in the year 2009. On 17 May 2009, he released the first version of the game on TIGSource forums for a small fee of 10$. Some people bought it, and Notch kept updating the game every week based on the feedback from the forums.
During this period, he worked on the game in his free time while still working for the jAlbum company. Eventually, as he released the alpha version on 28 June 2010 and the sales increased, he started to work on Minecraft full-time.
Next, he created a company named Mojang together with Jakob Porser and Carl Manneh. Soon after, on 20 December 2010, Mojang released a beta version of the game. It was no longer a one-man-show as they hired several new employees.
At this point, the Minecraft has already been wildly successful, and the last step was an official release. That happened on 18 November 2011.
On 1 December 2011, Jens “Jeb” Bergensten became the lead designer of Minecraft, which was also a massive milestone as he led the game in the right direction.
The game was frequently updated, and the next significant milestone came on 15 September 2014, when Microsoft announced that they are buying the Mojang for $2.5 billion.
Since then, the game has been continuously updated with many major updates, and it’s still super trendy.
You can watch the game evolution in the video below:
